29 Memorable Quotes From Elf
29 Memorable Quotes From 'Elf' Since it was released in 2003, the movie Elfà has become a Christmas classic. Directed by Jon Favreau and written byà David Berenbaum, the film tells the story of Buddy (Will Ferrell), an orphan who is adopted and raised by elves at the North Pole. Believing himself to be an elf, Buddy begins to encounter trouble as he gets older and becomes too large to use the toy-making machines. He eventually learns that he is human and sets out for New York City in search of his birth father. Of course, hilarity ensues as Buddys childlike innocence meets the cynicism of the big city. Elf was a box-office hit, winning praise from critics and audiences for its quotable lines and Ferrells high-energy performance. Its refreshing take on innocence, goodness, and Christmas cheer still resonates with audiences. The quotes below include Buddys most famous lines. Swirly Twirly Gumdrops Buddys journey from the North Pole to Manhattan is one of the most famous scenes in Elf.à The sequence places live-action Ferrell within the stop-motion animated world of the classicà Rankin/Bass Christmas specials. Buddys description of his trip is one of the most famous quotes in the movie: I passed through the seven levels of the candy cane forest, through the sea of swirly-twirly gum drops, and then I walked through the Lincoln Tunnel. Encountering the Human World Much of the comedyà comes from the contrast between Buddys boundless cheer and the gritty realities of New York. Buddy has no experience in the human world. All he knows are ice skating and reindeer, candy canes and toys. Hes not prepared for the Big Apple. [On seeing a sign that saysà Worlds Best Cup of Coffee]à You did it! Congratulations! Worlds best cup of coffee! Great job, everybody! Its great to be here. Good news! I saw a dog today! Im aà cotton-headed ninny-muggins. [To a doctorà performingà a paternity test] Can I listen to your necklace? [To a man on the elevator] Oh, I forgot to give you a hug. Its just nice to meet another human that shares my affinity for elf culture. Francisco! Thats fun to say! Francisco.à Frannncisco.à Franciscooo. [Answering the phone] Buddy the Elf! Whats your favorite color? Have you seen these toilets? Theyre GINORMOUS! [On cabs] Watch out, the yellow ones dont stop! [On the mail room] Its just like Santas workshop! Except it smells like mushrooms...and everyone looks like they wanna hurt me. [After chasing half-brother Michael] Wow, youre fast. Im glad I caught up to you. I waited five hours for you. Why is your coat so big? So, good news - I saw a dog today. Have you seen a dog? You probably have. How was school? Was it fun? Did you get a lot of homework? Huh? Do you have any friends? Do you have a best friend? Does he have a big coat, too? [From a note on an Etch A Sketch]à Im sorryà I ruined yourà lives and crammed 11 cookies into the VCR. The best way to spread Christmasà cheer is singing loud for all to hear. We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candyà corns, and syrup. Does somebody need a hug? I just like to smile! Smilings my favorite. Son of a nutcracker! Falling in Love Elf wouldnt be a Christmas classic if it didnt have a love story. After moving to Manhattan, Buddy begins hanging around the department store Gimbels, where he meets Jovie (Zooey Deschanel), one of the stores employees. At first, Jovie doesnt know what to make of Buddy, but she soon falls in love with his Christmas spirit. First, well make snow angels for two hours, then well go ice skating, then well eat a whole roll of Tollhouse cookie-dough as fast as we can, and then well snuggle. I think youre really beautiful and I feel really warm when Im around you and my tongue swells up. I thought maybe we could make gingerbread houses, and eat cookie dough, and go ice skating, and maybe even hold hands. Fake Santa at Gimbels Buddy is a kind, good-natured man. The only time we see him get angry in the movie is when a Santa comes to Gimbels and Buddy takes him to be an imposter, loudly insulting him. Buddy doesnt treat Santas elf much better. [Seeing a sign that Santa is coming to the toy store]à Santa! Oh my god! Santas coming! I know him! I know him! [To the fake Santa]à You stink. You smell like beef and cheese! You dont smell like Santa. What about Santas cookies? I suppose parents eat those, too? You sit on a throne of lies. Im in a store and Im singing! Hes an angry elf. [After getting beaten up by a little person, played by Peter Dinklage]à He must be a South Pole elf.

An awareness campaign for rescue dogs
An awareness campaign for rescue dogs The topic I have chosen is an awareness campaign for rescue dogs. My goal is to inspire others to rescue dogs as opposed to buying them from a pet shop or a breeder. I will be researching and exploring why rescuing is the better option, where and how to adopt them. I will also be discussing my dogs story and why my family and I made the decision to rescue my adorable, loveable, four- legged, furry, best friend, Henry! The inspiration I had for this project idea was my dogââ¬â¢s story. I hate the idea that there are so many dogs going through what my dog went through before we rescued him, such as being abused, left on the streets, etc. After my dog was previously abused and left on the streets he lived with a small family who found him but did not want to keep him. I want to raise awareness to this issue and bring attention to these dogs who do not have a voice of their own. I will be achieving this by making a logo and a specific color to represent rescue dogs. I may also make merchandise (e.g. badges, t-shirts, etc.). I want to make bananas for dogs to wear to symbolize rights for dogs. Bright colored posters and merchandise will also be features to draw attention to it. I have chosen ââ¬ËFairness and developmentââ¬â¢ as a global context. I chose this as it is obviously unfair that dogs are being treated in such a way as well as pet shop dogs/ breeder dogs are preferred over rescue dogs. I want to tell others that rescue dogs deserve a second chance at life with a new family. Majority of dogs put up for rescue have been previously abused and neglected which is not fair. My dog was on going to be on death row which means he was in a designated area for a while to die as no one wanted to adopt him but he was lucky to have us. This makes me think about how many dogs are in death row/ going to be and how one family could save a life. Not choosing a rescue dog over a pet shop dog can potentially end a dogââ¬â¢s life. However not choosing to buy a dog from a shop will not kill the dog as it will have many other families to choose from. How many dogs have been put down or put into pounds because someone just had to have the cute puppy in the window instead of an equally cute puppy begging for a family that will truly love and respect them that they never had experienced before? This is not ok. This should not be ââ¬Ëthe normalââ¬â¢.

Answer questions - Assignment Example Starting a project requires definition of what the project is required to accomplish. A project starts with an idea them the vision that must be associated with the vision of the business. Project charter acts as the starting point where it established the foundation of the project. This must include the business needs and the deliverables to be executed. All the stipulations must be tied up to roles and responsibilities of the project development team. Human and material resources must be well defined (Goldratt, 1997). Often, an organization must put more efforts in estimation of the cost of the project in the chartering stage. The risks affecting the projects are also considered and their effects to the duration and cost of the project evaluated. The benefits and cost estimates must be supported using consistent approaches which provide realistic estimates for both costs and benefits. The establishment of the vision of a project in accordance with the project charter facilitates the success of the project. The project charter must corresponds to the business case put across to demonstrate that the project is viable and will assist in achieving the financial, employee and customer goals. The project chartering phase allows for establishment of an effective process that identifies and resolves various issues and actions that arise during the project development process. The chartering process forms the first step in execution of Lean project (Leach & Lawrence, 2005). Getting the sponsors and management to sign is normally difficult. Only one person is required in championing the project and passing it around. A good charter must be in a position to offer a written documentation that efficiently approves the launch and the requests of the efforts in project planning. Furthermore, the documentation of the project charter allows for collaboration of the major stakeholders and improves the deliverables. This must fairly represent the views of major

Inadequate Staffing Ratios in Nursing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 2
Inadequate Staffing Ratios in Nursing - Essay Example There is a growing concern over this issue considering the fact that many solutions offered depict some weaknesses. Fist, the decision to increase nurse ratio has been linked to struggles between cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness. Studies conducted by Reiter et al (2012), to reveal the financial performance encompassing the direct cost of nursing leaves a lot to tell. According to his research, about 80% of this performance equaled the remunerations and benefits, 44% comprised inpatient care costs, and 30% reflected hospital expenditures. Given this data, one can easily deduce why the state government is struggling with insufficient budget to support adequate nurse to patient ratios. à Secondly, there an increased uncertainty on how new healthcare reform will affect ratios. Reiter, Harless, and Mark (2012) study on Californiaââ¬â¢s assembly bill (AB394) showed an increase of 20% daily nursing hours and estimated its cost to be about $168,000 to $2.3 over the following five years. With such costs, the general public (the patients included) is expected to pay heavily if this ratio is to be met. à Finally, there is increased concern for the lower number of a graduate from the nursing program. Medical schools across the nation depicted low student registration, a factor that has been linked to the current problems facing the nursing field. This deficit is made even worse.

To Think for Yourself Essay Example for Free
To Think for Yourself Essay Henry David Thoreaus, Walden, is a novel focused completely around the idea of self-reliance. In the novel, Thoreau goes even more in depth into this idea, focusing a passage on the specific idea of experiencing your life solely for yourself, not through the ideas or beliefs of anyone else. He states, No way of thinking or doing, however ancient, can be trusted without proof(1616). He fully believes that a person cannot live their life based on hear say. He believes that if you have not seen or experienced something yourself to prove that it is indeed true, you are living your life based on false pretenses missing out on not only some of the greatest aspects of life, but of forming your own self. Seeing this overpowering influence of the media and others in todays society on me, as Thoreau would, this is a belief my mother has instilled in me since the day I was born. She has always told me, If you didnt see it, hear it, taste it, smell it, or feel it for yourself, then you have no idea if it is true. Overcoming the large influence of our elders, as well as the media in this generation, means stepping out against the norm and experiencing life on our own terms, in order to learn just how much more the world has to offer than someone elses beliefs. Thoreau persuades his readers by providing us with several examples of times he has proven his belief to be true. He uses this example to mock a common belief of his towns people when he states, What everybody echoes or in silence passes by as true to-day may turn out to be falsehood to-morrow,Ã mere smoke of opinion, which some had trusted for a cloud that would sprinkle fertilizing rain on their fields (1616). Thoreau could not have chosen a better way to define other peoples opinions than as a mere smoke of opinion because that is exactly what it is. There is clearly no such thing as a fertilizing rain, but if Thoreau did not have the untrustworthy stance he had, he would have believed this fantasy just as everyone else did. Everyone in life, especially our elders, is going to have a different opinion on just about everything there is to have an opinion on. However, what they say to be true from their time may not be true today. Thoreau provides us with the example of the elders of his time not being smart enough to find fuel, while fuel had already become the largest source of heat for his time because someone decided to go against the norm and try it (1616). Therefore this was once again a statement easily proven false with a little effort. In Thoreaus passage, it is nearly impossible to ignore his brute stance on only trusting your own experiences and opinions over any one elses. He gives an even better example why he believes this so passionately when he states, One farmer says to me, You cannot live on vegetable food solely, for it furnishes nothing to make bones with; and so he religiously devotes a part of his day to supplying his system with the raw materials of bones; walking all the while he talks behind his oxen, which, with vegetable made bones, jerk him and his lumbering plow along in spite of every obstacle. (1616). In this quote, Thoreau even uses a sense of humor effectively proving his point, as well as showing his readers it is not just elders that are not to be trusted, it is everyone. He is clearly mocking this man, for the man blatantly contradicts himself by not even realizing the animal he is using for such hard labor, survives off of nothing but vegetables. Thoreau proves the valuable point; how can a person trust what people tell them when it is this easily proven wrong? He wants us to see this is only a few of the many things that others could swear to be true, only to be proved false by a little thought from a different perspective or experience. Reading this passage and seeing Thoreaus passionate belief has brought many prevalent concerns about todays society to mind. Being influenced by what others tell you to be true, based of off their beliefs, is still as big of an issue today as Thoreau believed it to be in this passage. There is not one person alive, whether it was in ancient history or today, that has not been persuaded in some way to follow a certain crowd or believe a certain thing just because it is the popular belief or simply what that individual believes to be true. Not only one of the greatest influences, but at times one of the greatest issues on society, will always be the media. All it takes is one meager talk show host to make a statement, whether about a celebrity, government official, or religion, for the entire world to believe it to be true, proof or no proof. It is a shame how many magazines or television shows support their business by selling magazines or episodes implying or hinting at something to be true even if it isnt. A prime example of this is the US Weekly, People, Ok!, Cosmopolitan, etc. magazines, that exists solely based on gossip and popular trends, yet this is what most of the world, especially young adults, choose to read for entertainment or advise. The phrase, All it takes is one rumor, true or not is prevalent now more than ever. People today do not take the time Thoreau is saying is necessary to find out if something is really true or not. A lot of the time, they simply just do not even care. That one rumor is all they need to hear for it to spread like wildfire. Not only can this ruin the victim of the rumors life, it alters the way the believers look at life. How are people supposed to think for themselves and develop their own identity when the world is telling them exactly whom they should be and what they should believe, no questions asked? All it takes is a little courage and a small amount of time to go against the norm to see if something is true in your opinion or just in everyone elses. As Thoreau says, What old people say you cannot do, you try and find that you can (1616). In his time, there was no overpowering media as there is today so I am referring to his old people as our media today and I know from many experiences, in the grand scheme of things, it is completely worth it to find out that you can. In conclusion, Thoreaus unwavering outlook on the need to prove what others have to say to be true before blindly trusting them is still very necessary today, if not more. There are going to be times when listening to others is the better judgment, especially in the case of safety, however, relying solely on others to tell you how to live your life or view others based on gossip is a different story. If you constantly follow what others tell you to do and not to do, you will never develop your own sense of the world and the people in it through your own mistakes and perspective. You will merely be walking through life in someone elses shoes. Works Cited Thoreau, Henry David. Walden. _The Anthology of American Literature, Vol. 1_. Ed. George McMichael. 10th ed. The Flu Shot Should Not Be Mandatory Essay -- Influenza Vaccine Papers
Should the Flu Shot Be Mandatory? Vaccines have been proclaimed by many people as one of the miracles of modern medicine. Vaccines are credited with saving thousands of lives and wiping out many contagious diseases. Recently, there has been a tremendous debate whether annual influenza vaccines should be mandatory. Influenza vaccines should be voluntary because people have the right to examine data on vaccinations and make their own informed decisions. Although people should have the freedom to choose to be vaccinated, the public needs to be educated about the personal, economical, and social benefits of receiving the influenza vaccine. In addition, people who are at a high risk of contracting influenza as well as health care providers should be encouraged to receive an influenza vaccine in order to decrease the major health burden associated with the disease. Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a viral infection of the respiratory system and it is characterized by abrupt onset of fever, sore throat, and nonproductive cough. Influenza is spread from person to person by inhalation of the droplets produced when a person infected with influenza coughs or sneezes. In addition, it can also be spread by contact with infected objects such as utensils. Current influenza vaccines are about 70% to 90% effective in preventing influenza in healthy adults. Since the vaccines are made of dead fragments of influenza viruses, they cannot cause influenza. The strains of influenza that circulate change every year and therefore, it is necessary to make a new influenza vaccine annually. After vaccination, the body's immune system produces antib... ...ld not be mandatory and should remain the choice of each individual. However, people at a high risk of influenza as well as health-care providers should consider receiving the vaccine. In addition, programs educating people about the benefits of influenza vaccination should become a priority among health officials. Ultimately, people should trust their own judgment when deciding whether influenza vaccines are right for them. --------------------------------------------------------------------- [1] Essen, G. ââ¬ÅEconomic Growth Without Distributive Justice Can Only Lead to Violenceââ¬Â.
ââ¬Å"Economic Growth without distributive justice can only lead to violenceâ⬠. A steady economic growth is a sign of a growing economy. Good economic growth often leads to the prosperity of the people of the country. But this is not always true for the entire population. Even when only 5% of the population is booming economically the economic growth would show a steady rise which though good for a country on the international front ,is a not so good for a country on the domestic front. Economic growth without distributive justice can only lead to violence. The economy wherein the rich get richer and the poor get poorer everyday is devoid of peace and prosperity. In India,it has happened in the past and happens even today ,when the employees see their employers make huge money while they are struggling to even make both ends meet, they hold protests,go on strikes demanding fee hike. It creates a void in the society, a gap that is hard to fill, a swamp that sucks the entire nation in. It is not very easy to see people become rich when you don't even get food twice a day. This leads to thefts, murders, and violence in the society. And with so many wrongdoings happening around you,the trust vanishes. The sense of living in a large family named society eludes us. Thus ,in my opinion the government of every country must put the best foot forward to ensure that the income is distributed as evenly as possible in the society to maintain peace and harmony in the society,so that the people can stay together and rejoice each other's growth and achievements.

The specialty coffee industry had seen steady growth for years and the trend was expected to continue until at least 2015. Of the various segments within the specialty coffee industry, most of the growth was attributable to beverage retailers ââ¬Å"Coffee and kiosksâ⬠. In 1979 there were approximately 250 specialty coffee retailers. The number quadrupled by 1989 to approx 1000 outlets, and it exploded to roughly 15000 by 2002. Specialty coffee buyers were generally more affluent, well educated, and worked in urban areas. Research indicates that individuals with college degrees purchased almost 50 % more specialty coffee more than those without college degrees. The link to education was even greater for people with some postgraduate education. In addition to education, households with two working parents and kids were more likely to purchase specialty coffee. Accordingly the market was an educated urban resident with disposable income to spend on fine coffee. 1- Rival of competitors Starbucks cooperation was the premier coffee retailer in the USA. Industry analysis generally credited it for popularizing specialty coffee and legitimizing higher drink prices. Starbucks expect revenues to grow 20 % / year and to increase its dominating 40 % market share. Starbucks has strong profits and cash flow that it planned to use to open company owned and licensed stores domestically and abroad. Diedrich coffee roasted and sold various brands of coffee through company retail stores and throughà distributors, restaurants, mail order, and specialty stores. It is a growing market with lots of pioneers that can make branches anywhere and threat the other chain in there selling areas. 5- Bargaining power of buyers There is a threat of bargaining power of buyers as there is a lot of competitors, which give the choice to convert from one chain to another. Moreover, chains are working strongly in the promotion, price, opening branches everywhere, developing the product, and cares regarding quality. It is a hard competition. c- The Organization The specialty coffee industry had seen steady growth for years and the trend was expected to continue until at least 2015. Nationally, specialty coffee sales totaled over $ 10 billion in 2005. The second best selling drinks were drip-brewed coffee beverages at $ 333336 / Store, and the third were cold and iced coffee beverages with an average of $22061 / Store. d- The marketing strategy 1- Product Todd tried to remain the purist in developing his product. He preferred to make fresh drinks from Espresso instead of drip-brewed coffee although it is less cost. Expresso menu offered traditional European style which is half caramel and half chocolate. Todd was following starbucks new product developments since people use to come and ask him for the same. i.e.; green tea cappuccino, iced tea, spiced cappuccino, pumpkin cappuccino and eggnog cappuccino. In addition to traditional coffee drinks, the shop also sold teas, smoothies and muffins, lemon bars, cookies and brownies. Todd did not present sandwiches or soups. Also he presented retail items such as T-shirts and coffee mugs with humorous coffee related sayings on them. 2- Prices Todd went looking at everyone elseââ¬â¢s prices. He made sure that his prices were 10 % lower than any competitor. He believed that having a low price was important in attracting new customers. 3- Promotion Todd offered product with prices 10 % less than competitors as he thinks it is more direct than using a ââ¬Å"buyer cardsâ⬠used by competitors. He says to customers ââ¬Å"Our prices are already 10 % lower than everybody so I am giving you a discount nowâ⬠Other promotion, Expresso Espresso advertised on the local radio station that Todd believed it had a strong studentââ¬â¢s audience. In addition the company placed ads in the campus. Flyers typically showed the menu and contained a 10 % off coupons. Another promotion idea , Todd was having live music. Band play was on Fridays and Saturdays nights during summer. 4- Publicity Todd created a policy whereby he would give away all tips. A huge coffee cup sat on the front counter with a sign indicating the charity of the week. Todd would collect whatever people chose to give and pass it on to good cause. The local paper considered this approach so novel that it ran an article on the practice. Customers had the opportunity to help others as they treated themselves. This had a considerable Feel good value for those participating. e- Primary Problem The specialty coffee industry had seen steady growth for years and the trend was expected to continue until at least 2015. Of the various segments within the specialty coffee industry, most of the growth was attributable to beverage retailers ââ¬Å"Coffee and kiosksâ⬠. f- Secondary Problem There is a huge competition, and competitors such as Starbucks and other big companies are getting outlets everywhere expanding to get a higher market share. Expresso Espresso got another competitor ââ¬Å"Satori Coffee Houseâ⬠half a mile away, also Carpe Diem is another competitor near to it, third one is Daily Gring which is very near to the University of South Alabama, Beaners is a franchise operation competing with Expresso Espresso. Perhaps the competitor that worried Todd the most was Starbucks. It is located in the busiest road in Mobil, which announced plans to build a drive through store on old shell road about 400 feet east of Expresso Espresso. Todd was concerned that Starbucks would take customers from Expressoââ¬â¢s drive through window. g- Alternative Solutions The importance of complete the order within 45 sec. for the drive through. Human Rights Watch - Essay Example The idea of human rights was developed and the rights and responsibilities of each individual were developed. As people gave their will over to governments, it became necessary for the government to have various responsibilities to protect the individual. This is how the rights of the individual were developed (Moehler 2008). In Asia, the code of Hammurabi is seen to be the earliest codification of human rights. It defined the rights and responsibilities of each individual. The code which included over two hundred clauses, also included such as issues as consumer protection in the form of outlining the responsibilities of builders to their customers. For instance, if a builder built a home for a customer and the home collapsed on the owner in a specific period of time, the builder would be sentenced to death. In Europe, the dawn of human rights can be seen as having started with the signing of the Magna Carter in the year. This was provoked by the acts of King John which led to many people, including the church and other sources of authorities being unhappy with the way King John of England was trying to restructure the power structure and to give himself much power. Later, Americas Watch was founded in 1981 as a way to watch human rights violation in America with the rise of civil wars in the

Philosophy 101 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Philosophy 101 - Essay Example Based on this argument, existentialism holds that there is no general essence among individual selves. It asserts that oneââ¬â¢s identity and purpose is fashioned by the individual subject alone. In this light, philosophy enables the individual subject to reflect on oneââ¬â¢s purpose in life, which in turn defines oneââ¬â¢s authenticity. An authentic lifestyle entails the affirmation of individual responsibility. It contends that humans must become highly reflective of the possible outcomes of their desired course of action. Such an act of cognition shall facilitate both prudent and moral conduct that contributes to the emancipation of the individual self. This shows how philosophy encourages us to become resolute in our own beliefs and convictions regardless of what traditional society or religion dictates. By this, we shall find value in life, in our pursuit of knowledge and meaning in the world, for such can lead to the acquisition of a deeper and holistic understanding o f life. Herein is the value of philosophy. For through it, we are able to exercise human freedom, and take hold of our own lives, based on our own choices and actions. It enables us reflect on the meaning of the most important and simple things in life, and most importantly, exalt individualism. Works Cited Kelly, Eugene. The Basics of Western Philosophy.
